Do Andy Samberg and the TV academy owe a royalty check to FX Networks chief John Landgraf?

The executive last August caused quite a stir when he declared that “there is simply too much television.” Landgraf was commenting on the rapidly increasing number of original scripted series. According to FX research, upwards to 371 scripted series were produced in 2014, and estimates were approaching 400 series for 2015.

That concern was the apparent launch pad for the opening musical montage for the Emmy Awards, in which host Samberg was so overwhelmed by the number of shows that he had to lock himself in a bunker for more than a year with an armful of DVDs to catch up.

The sequence, one of the highlights of the ceremony, featured cameos by Jon Hamm and Kerry Washington.

But really, Andy, you should have given just a little credit to Mr. Landgraf. Maybe a small royalty check will make up for it.
