Netflix gets into the awards game with the Flixies

Share

Just when you thought awards season was behind us, Netflix decides to get into the game with its own awards. But don’t worry, these awards take a realistic look at just how you use Netflix and you won’t even have to watch Seth MacFarlane sing about boobs to participate.

The Flixies, announced by Netflix on Wednesday, are designed to celebrate the viewing habits of the current TV consumer. So forget about best actor and actress or cinematography. The categories here include Best Hangover Cure, Best PMS Drama and Best Tantrum Tamer.

The categories may not be sexy, but Netflix is betting that its estimated 27.2 million subscribers will be interested in casting their votes. Even if it doesn’t result in a 3 1/2-hour award ceremony.

And skeptics will be pleased to note that Netflix’s original series, “House of Cards” grabbed just one nomination, for Best Marathon TV Show. (Anyone care to wager that it’ll probably beat out its fellow nominees in that category?)

Online voting is going on now and will end March 10. The top three winners in each category will be announced March 11.
