Royal baby birth sends John Oliver into fits of joy

The royal baby has finally been born and not since, well, Duchess Kate first announced her pregnancy has the media been swept up in such a frenzy of anglophilia.

Even “The Daily Show” got in on the action Monday night.

“Obviously, there is a lot to talk about,” began John Oliver. “Who am I kidding? There is exactly one thing to talk about.”

Following a news clip announcing the baby boy’s arrival, the host erupted in a fit of joy.

“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!” he exclaimed. “Yes, yes, yes!”

The “blessed news” came after a very long day of waiting by members of the media and the crowd gathered at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. As Oliver noted, the as-yet-unnamed heir to the throne seemed to be prolonging the labor, “perhaps sensing this would be the only kind of labor he would ever be involved in.”

Though news of the baby’s birth broke too late in the day for “The Daily Show” to give it the full treatment, Oliver chose to highlight one particularly ridiculous moment from the coverage: CNN contributor Victoria Arbiter, who described Kate as a “brilliant” royal for giving birth to a boy on the first shot.

Oliver wondered whether Arbiter was aware that Duchess Kate is “married to Prince William and not Khal Drogo,” and what her response might have been if the baby had been a girl.

Perhaps something along the lines of this: “Damnation upon your cursed womb, Katherine! Burn the princess for she has produced a baby of the weaker sex!”
