“The Comedians” has had its last laugh on FX.

The comedy starring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad as two warring comedians forced to work together on a situation comedy will not return for a second season. Despite the pedigree of its stars and behind-the-scenes talent, the series never drew a large viewership and did not earn any Emmy nominations.

Network executives declined to give details other than that the series was not being renewed. Its last episode premiered June 25.

Based on a Swedish series, “The Comedians” marked Crystal’s return to series television since he first came to prominence on ABC’s “Soap,” which premiered in 1977. It was the second failed TV series for Gad, who had starred in NBC’s short-lived “1600 Penn.”
