“The Killing” isn’t dead after all.

The AMC crime drama that was canceled last year by AMC following its troubled two-season run has been resurrected for a third season by AMC and Fox Television Studios, bringing back its creator Veena Sud and original stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman.

“ ‘The Killing’ from Day 1 has been a truly original take on the crime drama,” Charlie Collier, AMC’s president, said in a statement. “Veena Sud and the rest of the talented creative tream are hard at work ... we’re so pleased to welcome ‘The Killing’ back for another season.”

The announcement also made it clear that the new season would focus on a single new case that would be resolved over the course of 12 episodes.

The drama had premiered to huge critical acclaim. But critics and fans cried foul at the end of the first season when the investigation of the murder of Rosie Larsen was left unresolved and with many loose ends. Fans of the show felt a resolution had been promised.

The network released a statement last July: “After much deliberation, we’ve come to the difficult decision not to renew ‘The Killing.’ ”

In the third season, Enos and Kinnaman will reprise their respective roles as detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder.

The season opens a year after the solving of the Larsen murder. Linden is no longer a detective. But when her ex-partner Holder’s search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connect to a previous investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she had left behind.

Said Sud in a statement, “I couldn’t be happier to know that I will be returning to work with AMC, FTVS and Mireille and Joel on what is and has always been a passion project for me. To the fans that have supported the series, thank you for doing so. My team and I will work hard to deliver the best story that we can for Season 3.”
