Harry Shearer’s long-running radio show “Le Show” is no longer being broadcast on KCRW, and his similarly long-running job voicing multiple characters on “The Simpsons” doesn’t take up all that much time, so the actor, writer and sometime “Spinal Tap” bass player is decamping for New Orleans.

Shearer, who has maintained a residence in the city for years, will be artist in residence at the College of Music and Fine Arts of Loyola University New Orleans.

The university’s announcement describes Shearer’s role as a “source of professional advice and guidance” for film students. Students are to serve as his interns and assistants as they work to create new entertainment products using the school’s facilities.

In a statement, Shearer said this about his new post at the university: “For a curmudgeon like me, seeing all those bright, optimistic young people is impossibly depressing. But since I had tried teaching early in my youth (and liked it), these meetings revived my nascent interest in pounding my view of the world into malleable young minds. The offer to be artist in residence at Loyola allows me to pursue this mission with renewed vigor. And who knows? When one of them becomes a movie mogul, he or she may throw me a halfway decent part.”

Shearer has been one of the principal cast members of “The Simpsons” since 1989. In October 2011, the series was renewed for two years, taking it through its 25th season, which should begin airing this fall.

In April, Shearer’s satirical radio show “Le Show” was dropped from the schedule of KCRW-FM (89.9), to Shearer’s dismay. It continues to be distributed online via KCRW’s website.
