‘True Blood’ recap: Is romance in the air for Sookie?

Share

Louisiana’s violent crackdown on vampires grows nastier in “True Blood” Episode 63, “You’re No Good.” The state has plenty of resources – including lethal new weapons – but the undead are fighting back.

To that end, vampire Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) interrogates the Governor’s daughter Willa (Amelia Rose Blaire) and learns about “the camp,” a secret prison/research facility where “sick, sick, sick” experiments are performed on supernaturals.

Willa also reveals her mother had an affair with a vampire, partially explaining the Governor’s vendetta. Plus, waging war on vamps seems a sure path to reelection.

Since Eric has Willa as a bargaining chip, the wily Governor offers to cease hostilities. “I will reverse course,” he promises. But Eric doesn’t buy it, vanishing into the night with Willa, Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Tara (Rutina Wesley).

Held captive in that evil camp is the Rev. Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian), oily “spokesvampire” for the American Vampire League. When estranged wife Sarah (Anna Camp) enters the exam room, Steve mistakenly believes he’s free.

“You’re funny as a vampire,” taunts Sarah, who hasn’t forgiven Steve for absconding with funds from their Fellowship of the Sun church.

Cute Sarah and her big hair have bounced back, however. She penned a bestselling book detailing her righteous battle against vampires and now seeks fame and fortune in politics. Ambitious Sarah regards the government-run camp as part of “God’s master plan to save the human race by eradicating the vampire race.”

Back in Bon Temps, sickly Jason (Ryan Kwanten) and his faerie grandfather Niall (Rutger Hauer) continue tracking Warlow, the ancient vampire seeking Sookie (Anna Paquin) and her royal blood. Recruited to stop Warlow is mysterious “halfling” Ben Flynn (Rob Kazinsky), whose recent request for a date was rejected by Sookie. She’s icy when they reunite but soon warms up. Is romance on its way? Is Ben a good guy?

As for Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), he regains consciousness after his beat down by packmaster Alcide (Joe Manganiello), who kidnapped werewolf child Emma (Chloe Noelle) so she can live with her grannie Martha (Dale Dickey).

Alcide’s risky behavior enrages girlfriend Rikki (Kelly Overton). “All you did was bring trouble into this pack,” she exclaims, fearing werewolves will soon be persecuted along with vampires.

Volunteering to help Sam recover Emma is Nicole (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), a well-meaning but naïve out-of-towner who believes humans and supernaturals can peacefully coexist. As if!

Nicole and her do-gooder buddies approach Alcide’s pack with a video camera, hoping to film a human-to-werewolf transformation. But these trashy shape-shifters don’t take kindly to strangers. They viciously attack! Sam grabs Emma in the chaos, then sets off to rescue injured Nicole.

Vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer), meanwhile, is haunted by visions of his subjects being executed by the sun’s rays. Since faerie blood provides more protection than SPF, perhaps a synthetic supply would fend off the true death.

Accordingly, Bill dispatches progeny Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) to seize an organic chemistry professor with an eye for cute coeds. Jessica’s sexy outfit and coy smile do the trick.

Bill needs a supply of faerie blood to start production so he pleads with Sookie for a donation. She adamantly refuses. “You’re dead to me now, Sookie Stackhouse,” he says bitterly.

On his walk home, Bill is stopped for a curfew violation by Sheriff Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer), whose four faerie daughters have miraculously grown from babies to giggly tweens in just three episodes.

“Children – what a blessing,” says devious Bill after smelling those faerie kids on a stuffed toy in Andy’s patrol car. Has Bill found his blood source? Would he drain innocent children?

You’re no good, Bill Compton!
