PHILADELPHIA – MyPHL17 is set to air the 2009 Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. The telethon, starring MDA national chairman and number-one volunteer Jerry Lewis, will air on myphl17 beginning Sunday night, September 6th at 10:30pm and will continue through Labor Day, Monday, September 7th, to 6:30pm. Locally, myphl17 Director of Community Relations Steve Highsmith, will emcee the tri state area coverage of the telethon along with Lori Wilson, Denise Nakano and Tim Furlong of myphl17 News at Ten Powered by NBC10. Families assisted by Philadelphia based MDA organizations will also be highlighted throughout the broadcast. Some of those to be featured are: the Hilferty Family of Philadelphia/DE, Alexa Dectis, Brandon Harris and family, Lance Pierce and family, Shelby Van Vliet and family and Austin Whitmoyer and family all from Allentown, PA.
The MDA Telethon is a non-stop variety show with round-the-clock entertainment by stars from Hollywood to Broadway and performances by international recording artists. Artists slated to appear include Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Tony Orlando, Charo, Wynonna, Train, Bo Bice, Terry Fator, comedian George Wallace and more.
Co-hosting the show with Lewis will be television's Jann Carl, Nancy O'Dell, Ace Young, Allison Sweeney, and Tom Bergeron.
The telethon will also feature many local check presentations from major corporations and community groups such as the International Association of Firefighters ( IAFF) Local #22, ACME & Acosta Supermarkets, Harley Davidson, Genuardis, Lowe's, NuStar and more.
The 2009 Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon hopes to exceed its 2008 total of $65 million to support MDA programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.
