Cars.com offers 10 suggestions when shopping for certified
pre-owned vehicles.

1. Spend just as much time and effort researching CPO resale values as you would when purchasing traditional used cars.

2. Examine the warranty’s vehicle age and mileage limits.

3. Ensure that the CPO vehicle you are considering has been certified by the manufacturer, not just by the dealer. That will help assure the vehicle has met rigorous standards set forth by the manufacturer, and that it can be serviced at the manufacturers’ dealer locations coast to coast.

4. Ask for a vehicle repair and maintenance history.

5. Assure that all of the vehicle’s important components have been checked by asking to review the certification checklist.

6. Ensure the remaining part of the new car warranty is clear and in writing.

7. Recognize that the majority of CPO warranties cover only the vehicle’s powertrains. Bumper-to-bumper coverage may cost more.

8. Check to see if you can take advantage of a return policy and within what period.

9. Thoroughly test drive the CPO vehicle before buying.

10. Don’t assume the price on the CPO vehicle is set in stone. You’re just as able to negotiate price on a CPO vehicle as the price on any other vehicle.
