Gangster chic, rebel cool, outlaw style — what-ever
you call it, Perry Henzell’s 1973 film casts a glamorous
sheen over life outside the law. Singer Jimmy Cliff gives
a charismatic performance as a small-time Kingston hustler
who becomes a local folk hero as his record shoots up
the local charts while he stays one step ahead of the
law. With a percolating soundtrack, the film was a key
part of breaking reggae music and Jamaican culture to

a weekend camping trip together. Amidst the natural beauty
of the Pacific Northwest, it becomes apparent that their
lives are heading in different directions. Anchored by
deli-cately understated performances by Will Oldham (known
for his musical work as Bonnie Prince Billy and Palace)
and Daniel London, Old Joy is a quiet, powerful look at
the ways in which people change and time marches ever

Calling themselves “El Cartel,” a trio of under-ground
rappers in Cuba struggle to get their music heard while
bypassing the official govern-ment-sanctioned music industry.
Growing by word of mouth thanks to their electrifying
perfor-mances, they put all of their energy into creating
a music festival, even as government officials and Hurricane
Charley close in. Full of their spirited music, which
mixes loping beats with hot salsa horns, East of Havana
is an inspiring reminder that the creative drive cannot
