“It’s a strange world,” muses Lumberton resident Jeffrey
Beaumont, but he has no idea just how strange until he
embarks on a twisted odyssey through his small town’s
pitch-dark underworld to find the owner of a severed human
ear. Two decades after it first stunned audiences, David
Lynch’s signature work has lost none of its power. It
remains as potently bizarre, violent and audacious today
as it was then. Lynch will appear in person at this special
screening honoring the 20th anniversary of his surreal
American Gothic classic. 121 min.

Acclaimed documentarian Kirby Dick thrusts his head
into the lion’s mouth with his latest work, an engrossing
and witty investigation of the Motion Picture Association
of America, its rating system and its shocking influence
on American culture. Dick starts out asking a few simple
questions and ends up spearheading a covert, private investiga-tion
of the organization and its anonymous board members. Mingling
the thoughts of the best indie filmmakers with the mounting
investigation, Dick reveals the MPAA as an insidious censor
with the unique power to control what American sees. 97

When two boys steal the family cassette player Parisa
has snuck out of her house, they also get her most prized
possession—a tape with her dead father’s voice
on it. Determined to get it back, the young girl enlists
a friend to help track the boys down. Meanwhile, the cassette
player itself goes on a rather incredible journey. In
this meditation on the way in which little things can
take on huge importance, writer/director Ali Zamani Esmati
coaxes quietly touching performances from an extremely
young cast. Iran. 80 min.
