Opening Night: The Devil Wears Prada
Thu.,
June 22, 7:30 p.m.
Mann Village Theatre
As light and breezy as Marc Jacobs’ spring line, David
Frankel’s adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s best
seller begins as aspiring writer Andrea has just started a new
job as assistant to Miranda Priestly, Editor-in-Chief of Runway,
the most powerful woman in fashion and all-around boss from
hell. Earnest, naïve and wearing sensible shoes, Andrea’s
completely unprepared for what lies ahead. Miranda turns out
to be far worse than she could ever have imagined, and the “clackers,”
impossibly thin young women whose impossibly high heels click
and clack down the hallways, treat her with unmitigated scorn.
But after a particularly brutal encounter with Miranda, Andrea
decides to beat them all at their own game. However, success
in the world of haute couture comes with a price, and soon Andrea
realizes she may have sold her soul the day she put on her first
pair of Jimmy Choos.
When Weisberger’s roman à clef was first published
in 2003, Miranda was assumed to be a thinly-veiled Anna Wintour,
Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and Weisberger’s former boss.
Now we know her true identity. Meryl Streep is Miranda Priestly,
eviscerating everyone with her razor tongue in one of her finest
comedic roles ever. Meanwhile Anne Hathaway, fresh from her
triumph in Broke-back Mountain, displays a sparkling screen
presence which at times recalls Audrey Hepburn, another young
actress who looked great in designer clothing. 109 min.
