AD REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ads should not be designed to blend in with the site, do not mimic editorial fonts or colors.
  • Ads should not include fake form elements of other graphic symbols that mimic functionality that does not exist.

RICH MEDIA:

A method of communication that incorporates animation, sound, video, and/or interactivity. It can be used singularly or in combination with the following technologies: streaming media, sound, Flash, and with programming languages such as Java, Javascript, and DHTML. It is deployed via standard Web and wireless applications including e-mail, Web design, banners, buttons and interstitials.

Ad Types:

Free-Form Floating Ads
An ad or ads appearing within the main browser window on top of the Web page's normal content, thereby appearing to "float" over the top of the page.

Flash (Shockwave)
Macromedia's vector-based graphics file format, which is used to display interactive animations on a Web page. This form of rich media technology is available via a plug-in.

Streaming Audio/Video
An Internet data transfer technique that allows the user to see and hear audio and video files. The host or source compresses, then "streams" small packets of information over the Internet to the user, who can access the content as it is received. Streaming video/audio must be hosted by a third party. Audio/Video should be user initiated with an on/off button prominently displayed.

Interstitial Ads
Ads that appear between two content pages. Also known as transition ads, intermercial ads, splash pages and Flash pages. Interstitial ads must be hosted and delivered by a third-party.

Acceptable Formats:

Blue Streak, Unicast/Enliven, Eyeblaster, PointRoll, Shoshkeles, Eyewonder, Commflash, DART Motif and CheckM8.

Guidelines:

latimes.com accepts most rich media creatives. However, please note that these guidelines have not been accepted by all web publishers nor have they been endorsed by the IAB. Therefore it is crucial to exercise the first guideline regarding Floating rich media ads in particular.

  • Only one of the following ad types can appear on a single page: pop-up, freeform overlay or audio enable ads. Pop-under ads are limited to two on a single page. Note: Exceptions require GM approval.
  • Frequency cap limitations are imposed on all ads that, without user initiation, overlay or interrupt editorial content.
  • Within standard ad units, animation may be continuous but no strobing effects are allowed at any time. The Flash command which enables the browser to "shake" may not be used anywhere on TI sites.
  • Floating ads must include a prominently visible close button and may not run more than 12 seconds.
  • Freeform overlay ads must include a prominently visible close button and run a maximum of 10 seconds.
  • Full page interstitial ads can appear for 10 seconds. Full page intromercial ads must be served with branding for the site that it is served on.
  • For all ad types and creative, only sound that is user-initiated will be accepted. All creative must include a prominently visible on/off switch for sound.
  • Mouse-over interaction with an ad can only provoke ad interaction within the current open browser window and can not link a user to a new Web site.
  • All versions of creative that will be served via a third party, must be provided for testing and approval prior to appearing on the site.
