Program Description
The Holiday Book Drive is held during October and November each year. Donations of "gently used" children's books, for grades kindergarten through third grade, are solicited from the general public. This solicitation is supported with advertising in the Los Angeles Times, including the strip ad on the Kids' Reading Room page (guaranteed space) and space available advertising (not guaranteed). Posters and flyers advertising the Book Drive are distributed to all Book Drive Partners for posting in their businesses. Book collection boxes are distributed to the partners who serve as public drop-off locations for book donations. Books are distributed in the counties from which they are collected by the local county offices of education. Scholastic Inc. donates 200,000 new books each year. Since the first book drive in 1999, over 5 million new and gently used books have been distributed in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.
