A big job? Certainly. But the Los Angeles Times believes it is a job that must be done and has committed resources and staff to Reading by 9 to help it succeed.
No skill is more critical to the future of a child, or to a democratic and prosperous society, than literacy. It is the foundation for learning across all subjects.
Here are some of the actions underway.
The Los Angeles Times
| • | publishes the Kids' Reading Room page every Sunday featuring stories, book reviews by children, parent/child crossword puzzles and creativity corner; |
| • | encourages employees during the workday to tutor and read aloud to children in the paper's partner schools; |
| • | provides free advertising space for public awareness campaigns; |
| • | offers children and parents an opportunity to become acquainted with new children’s books, meet their authors and hear from literacy experts at the annual Festival of Books. |
