A big job? Certainly. But the Los Angeles Times believes it is a job that must be done and has commited resources and staff to Reading by 9 to help it succeed.
No skill is more critical to the future of a child, or to a democratic and prosperous society, than literacy. It is the foundation for learning across all subjects.
Here are some of the actions underway.
The Los Angeles Times
| • | publishes the Kids' Reading Room page six days a week featuring interactive reading activities for children and parents; |
| • | encourages employees during the workday to tutor and read aloud to children in the paper's partner schools; |
| • | provides millions of dollars of free advertising space for public awareness campaigns; |
| • | publishes reviews of children's books monthly in Sunday Book Review; |
| • | offers children and parents opportunities at two annual events, Festival of Books and KidCity, to become acquainted with new children's books, meet their authors and hear from literacy experts. |
