Reading
by 9 is the Los Angeles Times initiative to help
children achieve grade-level reading skills by the time they
reach the age of nine.
Times in Education
is involved in several activities to support this important
effort.
They include:
- Creation of special Times
in Education study guides that support reading skills
for grades K-3. Lessons are correlated to the California
State Instructional Frameworks and are available at no cost
to teachers.
- Training and support for Times employees who volunteer
as reading tutors or storytime readers in Southland schools.
- Participation in book drives and distribution to area
schools.
- Development of a booklet called ÊFamily Times Together¯
which provides dozens of activities that parents can do
at home with content from The Times to help their children
practice and improve basic skills.
