for instance, a photo station will be set up and a photo editor will
stand by with a laptop and a modem. Photographers give their digital
cards to the editor for electronic transfer back to the newspaper.
Photographers outside of the plant locally or as far away as any foreign country can send their photos back to the newspaper in a similar manner by using sophisticated satellite phones to uplink to communications satellites. Times photographers and reporters are presently sending their materials to Los Angeles from Afghanistan using this technology. Once in the photo department, photos are "corrected" by color technicians using the PhotoShop program. The Times has very strict guidelines, however, regarding work done on photos. People or images cannot be added or moved about in photographs. All the color technicians can do is make slight adjustments of tones, contrasts and shades to ensure high quality color printing. The Time's Photo staff consists of photographers, color technicians and editors. Fifty photographers travel the city, state, country and the world for the newspaper. Recently, Times' photographers were sent to cover the World Trade Center disaster, the Sydney Olympics and the church occupation in Bethlehem. Last Step | Next Step |
