An Encore Performance
A MASTERFUL ACCOMPANIMENT TO THE ÜBER-LUXURY WYNN LAS VEGAS IS UNVEILED
It plays eerily like a scene out of “Ocean’s Thirteen.” It’s opening night of a hot new Strip property and
there’s this pervasive feeling that something dramatic is about to happen. There’s the imposing exterior edifice, the
clamorous casino floor, the elaborate atrium, the eager guests and the cavalier Las Vegas casino mogul moving
enthusiastically through the crowds.
But here, the plots diverge. There are no computer failures, no power outages, no handsome master thieves planning the heist of
a lifetime. Just a beautiful hotel gracefully parting its doors and giving the public another Strip landmark to ogle. Steve Wynn, icon of
luxury in Las Vegas, has followed up his eponymous Stripside oeuvre with another masterpiece, this one filled to overflowing with the
lavish luxuries and subtle touches that have come to define his signature style.
Wynn was involved in nearly every design detail at Encore. It was an opportunity for the billionaire developer
to incorporate facets of décor that, for whatever reason, he had been unable to include in previous endeavors. Encore’s
signature is beauty and intimacy, a Las Vegas hotel of quiet marvels. It’s an uncommon marriage of understatement and opulence.
Head into Wynn’s new European-style nightclub, XS, and you’ll pass a haunting sculpted relief of bodies draped in tightly stretched
sheets of gold — it hints at the erotic aesthetic favored inside. The club has the requisite Vegas go-go poles but the
true kicker is the sparkling indoor/outdoor pool surrounded by (and filled with) frolicking hotel guests.
With 2,034 rooms, Encore is an all-suite property. All rooms feature tasteful marble bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows with
dazzling, if not dizzying, views of the city. There are Salon and Tower suites on each floor that measure a staggering 1,408 to 2,261 square feet.
Conventional Vegas wisdom says that guests will gamble more if they can’t see the sun — or a clock. Encore eschews convention by allowing
plenty of sun- and moonlight to stream in. This bright, airy feeling is further augmented by copious use of white marble, both in the
public areas of the hotel and in the guest rooms.
Add to this a Sinatra-themed restaurant, a truly spectacular pool and one of the best spas on the Strip, and it becomes clear: This is
an encore performance, but unlike most sequels, it may be better than the original.
