THE NEW POOL AT THE GOLDEN NUGGET OFFERS SUN, SWIMMING — AND SHARKS?

The Tank at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino might be wildest swimming experience Las Vegas has to offer. The three-story pool complex — complete with a shark tank as its centerpiece — lets swimmers get inches away from exotic creatures of the deep.

Sun-seekers can lounge by the meandering free-form swimming pool and simultaneously check out the 200,000-gallon aquarium and its colorful reef habitat. Inside it dwell some of the most feared denizens of the deep, including sand tiger sharks, brown sharks, Pacific blacktip sharks, nurse sharks and a zebra shark, as well as Southern stingrays and a wide variety of large game fish.

More adventurous guests can take a ride down the Shark Chute — a three-story water slide that descends through the center of the aquarium, protected from the sharks, fish and stingrays by four inches of sturdy acrylic.

Since the spring 2007 opening, the Shark Chute has proved to be the most popular part of the Tank, said Justin McVay, public relations manager at the Golden Nugget. “The water slide, coupled with the aquarium, makes for a ride you won’t find anywhere else in the world,” he said. “It’s really quite an experience, and the good thing is, you can enjoy it as many times as you’d like.”

Part of a $170-million renovation project, the heated pool complex is open year-round, weather permitting, and also features waterfalls, gaming tables, a retail kiosk, daybeds, private cabanas with plasma televisions and refrigerators, and the Dive Bar, a poolside bar offering specialty cocktails.

“The Tank really delivers in every way a pool in Las Vegas should,” McVay said. “There’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

During the spring and summer months, the Tank is open from 10 a.m. to as late as 10 p.m. daily; while the Jacuzzi and Dive Bar are open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Cabanas and daybeds are available for daily rental and rates vary depending on day of week and time of year, but are as low as $50 per day during the off-season and $100 in season.

Having completed the pool complex, the Golden Nugget has more renovations in the works. “By the end of 2009, the Tank, along with the rest of the property, will welcome our newest addition, a $150-million, 500-room luxury hotel tower, which, when completed, will bring more amenities to the property — including additional gaming, dining and entertainment,” McVay said.

McVay isn’t dishing out all the details. “I don’t want to give away the surprise,” he said. “You’ll just have to wait and see what 2009 brings to the Golden Nugget.”
