A Night at the Opera

Romance! Jealousy! Horribly deformed, nasty-tempered musical geniuses and the women who are inexplicably attracted to them! And that’s just the first half hour. Now into its third year, “Phantom — The Vegas Spectacular” is still packing them in at a $40-million custom-built theater. At 95 minutes with no intermission, Las Vegas’ version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” is shorter than its London and Broadway counterparts but makes up for it with incredibly elaborate set pieces and only-in-Vegas special effects — like that 2,000-pound chandelier.
