Costume designer Jane Greenwood to get lifetime achievement Tony

One Tony Award winner is already a lock, with organizers of the theater awards ceremony announcing that costume designer Jane Greenwood would be this year’s recipient of a special Tony for lifetime achievement.

Tuesday’s announcement included the following words of praise from Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, executive director of the American Theater Wing: “It is our honor to present Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding work in costume design and for her dedication to the theatre. She has made a significant imprint on the history of Broadway with her artistry.”

Greenwood, a professor at Yale School of Drama and 16-time Tony nominee, has a costume design CV that includes more than 125 Broadway productions. Among those noted in today’s announcement were “The Ballad of the Sad Café” (her first, in 1963), “Once Upon a Mattress,” “The Little Foxes,” “An American Daughter,” “Psychopathia Sexualis,” “Master Class,” “Passion,” “She Loves Me,” “Next Year,” “California Suite,” “Medea, Plenty,” “Heartbreak House,” “The Iceman Cometh,” “Ah, Wilderness!,” “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” and “Our Town.”

In a recent post, our colleague David Ng calls Greenwood “the Susan Lucci of the Tony Awards,” noting that her first nomination came back in 1965 and her most recent in 2009 for a revival of “Waiting for Godot” and was nominated twice in 1994 (for “Passion” and a revival of “She Loves Me”).

The full list of 2014 Tony Award nominees is scheduled to be announced on April 29, with the awards ceremony scheduled to follow on June 8 in a three-hour CBS telecast hosted by Hugh Jackman at Radio City Music Hall.
