Emmys 2013: The reemergence of the bob haircut

Share

The bob, made famous in the 1920s by the flappers of the era -- and considered rather scandalous at the time -- has evolved into a chic and timeless style. Just ask the grande dame of fashion, Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour, who for years has sported the same chin-length bob with a fringe.

At the 65th Emmy Awards, the bob found its way onto the red carpet over and over again. Viewers saw the hairstyle on women from all hair colors on the strand spectrum: brunettes, blonds and redheads.

“Downton Abbey” actress Michelle Dockery went with a side-parted, straight bob, hair tucked behind her ears, with sparkly earrings as accessories. This was much more demure than her waves at last year’s Golden Globes. E! host Giuliana Rancic sported a chestnut-colored A-line cut that was sleek, straight and blew effortlessly in the breeze.

When it came to the blonds, Jane Krakowski wore a teased, A-line bob -- one she seemed to be loving as she posed for the shutterbugs. Meanwhile Elizabeth Moss of “Mad Men” sported a straight, edgier ‘do, resembling a pixie-cut, with pin-straight ends.

But it was blond actress and Emmy winner for lead actress in a drama Claire Danes who surprised viewers at home -- and sparked Twitter chatter -- with her faux bob. “Girls” actress Lena Dunham was quick to point it out when she took over Ryan Seacrest’s hosting job at the E! booth on the red carpet.

“Mad Men” actress Christina Hendricks did a curly take on the bob, channeling the 1930s with medium-sized ringlets that hit just below her jaw.

On the longer side of things, just barely qualifying as a bob, “How I Met Your Mother’s” Cobie Smulders worked a voluminous ‘do with waves galore. Her blond equivalent appeared to be Julianne Hough, who wore a wavy, tousled cut.

So whether the bob was curly, straight or wavy, it popped up all over the carpet on women of all ages and hair types. And when it did, it was impossible to ignore its wearer’s exuberance.
