Fun facts: What goes into producing Macy’s Glamorama?

Share

The 31st anniversary of the Glamorama -- formally the Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama -- fundraiser is coming up in Los Angeles on Sept. 12, and it promises to be a more-than-full evening with its fashion runway; light show; performances by the Backstreet Boys, Cirque du Soleil’s Zarkana troupe and the Summer Set; and an after party at the California Market, as I wrote about last week.

That seems like a lot to take in -- and it’s a lot to produce, as well. Macy’s puts on the Glamorama show in Minneapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with proceeds going to support local charities. (In L.A., the funds will go to AIDS Project Los Angeles.)

Organizers provided these fun facts about some of the things that go into putting on the show:

• It’s a one-hour event, but it takes more than a year to plan, seven days of rehearsals and 10 hours of model fittings.

• Six semi-trucks are required to transport the show and and after party trappings to each city.

• More than 350 media credentials are issued for the four-city tour.

• Forty-three models from Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco participate in the shows.

• Nearly 150 outfits and pairs of shoes are seen on the runway.

• The designer samples and outfits are the same ones seen at fashion weeks around the world.

• It takes a team of more than 80 professionals -- including hair stylists, wardrobe stylists, makeup artists and dressers --to prepare the models.

• A catering staff of 40 chefs, 15 server captains, 70 servers, 40 bartenders and 10 bar backs work the after party.

• The show uses 42 computers, 350 lighting fixtures, 12 projectors and 60,000 watts of sound.

• Eighty LED panels made up of more than 725,000 pixels and totaling nearly 500 square feet make up the LED wall that serves as the backdrop for the show.

All those lights and computers and LED panels are likely what’s behind this year’s theme, “Fashion in a New Light” -- although, as evidenced by the fun facts, putting on the show is definitely not a light matter.

Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama, 8 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Orpheum Theatre, 842 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, and 8 p.m. Sept. 19, SHN Orpheum Theatre, 1192 Market St., San Francisco. Tickets start at $75 for performance only, $225 including the after party, and are available on the Glamorama website.
