Several L.A.-area mustachioed men (and one with award-winning sideburns) won big at a national facial-hair face-off over the weekend, taking home seven medals -- five of them won by members of one club of beard and mustache enthusiasts.

According to the official results announced Sunday, local competitors taking home gold medals in their respective categories at the Oct. 25 event in Portland, Ore., included Dan Lawlor (in the Freestyle Moustache category), Roberto Campos (Imperial Moustache), Jeffrey Moustache (Musketeer), Nate Johnson (Sidburns) and Steve Scarpa (Fu Manchu).

Additionally, Matt Bilfield took home a silver (second place) medal in the Dali Moustache category and Al Underwood took home a bronze third-place medal in the Musketeer category.

All but Scarpa (who hails from Tehachapi) and Underwood (from Toluca Lake) are official members of a local group of facial-hair fanatics known as the Los Angeles Facial Hair Society (though Scarpa serves as a judge when the group holds its own local competitions).

The wins clearly help cement Los Angeles’ reputation as the launchpad for award-winning lip spinach. Less clear, though, is what exactly the event is. Officially dubbed the “Just for Men World Beard and Moustache Championships” (the beard dying product is a title sponsor) and legally trademarked in the U.S. by organizer Phil Olsen, the event is not affiliated with the biannual, long-running Euro-centric World Beard and Mustache Championships organized by the World Beard and Moustache Assn. -- which isn’t scheduled to take place until 2015 in Leogang, Austria.

According to organizers the roster of competitors included more than 300 men from 29 U.S. states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and nine foreign countries. The below results are listed in descending order from first- to third-place finisher.
