New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Narciso Rodriguez review

NEW YORK -- Narciso Rodriguez showed his spring 2014 collection Tuesday night at New York Fashion Week to a crowd that included Jessica Alba and Greta Gerwig.

The look: I like to think of Rodriguez as a modern artist who paints with cloth, making use of positive and negative space (lots of flashes of skin here), sheer and matte layers, shine and texture, such as the seed-like embroidery on a couple of pieces that brought to mind Pointillism.

Key pieces: A black silk blazer with laminated bottom panel, worn with black laminated short shorts; a black-and-white sleeveless crop top over a white asymmetrical skirt; a black jacket with laminated lapel, over short shorts; mixed blush and copper jacquard mini-dress with cutout triangle over the hip; copper laminated linen dress with brushstroke effect; black and white sheer and mesh assemblage dress; tangerine, blush, black and white dress with Pointillist-like embroidery on the bodice; citrine silk dress with flyaway cape-like draping in the back.

The verdict: A marvel of color and precise construction. And what an audacious expression of sex-appeal! In the super-short skirts and dresses, the models’ legs went on for miles.
