Prada, Baz Luhrmann fete ‘Great Gatsby’ costumes on starry night

Director/producer/writer Baz Luhrmann must be pretty proud of his latest offering, “The Great Gatsby,” due out May 10. At least it looked that way Tuesday night in New York at Prada’s cocktail reception kicking off the SoHo store’s exhibit of the movie’s costumes, designed by Luhrmann’s wife, Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin, in collaboration with fashion designer Miuccia Prada. One might say he embodied the phrase “busting his buttons” (as seen here). Some of the movie’s stars -- Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher -- attended, as did Katy Perry, Florence Welch and Maggie Gyllenhaal. [WWD]

Designer John Galliano has lately been taking small steps back into the fashion world, after his firing by Dior, conviction on charges of making anti-Semitic comments and rehab. But he doesn’t plan to attend the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala on Monday, even though his work is represented in the exhibition kicking off the gala, “Punk: Chaos to Couture.” [The Cut]

Miley Cyrus shows off her new punk image as V magazine’s latest cover girl. And by that, we mean spiky pink hair, tats, boots, lots of partly revealed, usually taboo body parts on display in the spread photographed by Mario Testino. [V magazine]

Designer Kimberley Ovitz showed a fall collection at New York Fashion Week earlier this year, but now comes word via WWD that she plans to take a break from producing her apparel line. She’s working on some collaborations instead. [WWD] (Subscription required.)
