Southern California is facing record heat this weekend, but you don’t have to look bedraggled while you’re living through it.

We culled our archives for some of the best tips on looking good when it’s hot outside. Here’s how to look cool during a heat wave.

1. Lighten up. Use the sheerest foundation, preferably matte or semi-matte. Anything with a lot of moisture will cause too much shine in hot weather. Tinted moisturizers or BB creams are good options too. And use a light touch when applying.

2. Waterproof. Use waterproof eyeliner and mascara to avoid raccoon-like black smudges around your eyes.

3. Prep. Use a dab of primer or foundation on eyelids before applying shadow to help the color stay put.

4. Let lips shine. Don’t use anything heavy. Ditch the lipstick in favor of a gloss or a highly pigmented balm or butter.

5. Set. Finish things off with a light dusting of translucent powder. If even that sounds too heavy, use blotting tissue. And be sure to tuck a pack of blotting paper in your pocket or bag to use on the go.

6. Cool. Ponytails are chic right now, shown on fall runways at Balmain, Chanel and Ralph Lauren. And they’re red carpet go-to styles for Emma Roberts, Taylor Swift and Sandra Bullock, among others. So sweep your hair to the back or top of your head this weekend and you’ll be haute, not hot.
