“Modern Family” actress Sarah Hyland took her hair cues from the Valentino runway at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, but on Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild red carpet, she looks to be channeling Veronica Lake.

Her clean, side-swept look was created by hairstylist Ryan Richman, who says he wanted to create something sophisticated yet young and classically beautiful to complement her pale pink Pamella Roland gown.

Richman began by applying KMS California Moist Repair to Hyland’s damp hair for moisture and manageability. He created a deep side part, then blew the hair dry in sections, using a large boar-bristle round brush and focusing on the ends of the hair.

“To help eliminate frizz and smooth the hair cuticle, turn the negative ion switch on your blow-dryer to the ‘on’ position,” advises Richman.

To get the 40s starlet bounce, he started at the mid-shaft of the hair using a 1 1/4-inch curling iron to curl her tresses all in the same direction, then sprayed each section with KMS California Hair Stay Dry Xtreme Hairspray for added hold.

Last, he brushed the curl out gently and began working it over one shoulder, tucking and pinning both sides of the hair behind her ears with a bobby pin.
