Essentials: The classic army jacket

Fashion ShowsEntertainmentJunya WatanabeDries Van Noten

Once a go-to piece for military brats, the classic army jacket has become a stylish wardrobe staple for wear far beyond the base. The faded green outerwear was reworked on the runways at Dries Van Noten and Junya Watanabe back in fall of 2010 and the fresh new looks have gained in popularity for mainstream consumption. The utilitarian style, sometimes awash in camouflage, has gone glam with playful studs, feminine shapes and mixed materials.

The Current Elliot Infantry jacket, $268 at Saks. This military-inspired jacket features a double-breasted front with oversize cargo pockets, a cape-like shape through the back and short sleeves.

The Sanctuary army jacket, $158 from Nordstrom, toughens the surplus style with faux leather sleeves.

Rag & Bone's Wynn quilted jacket, $695 from http://www.Shopbop.com, is a fun, warmer twist on the style, with a detachable hood and leather trim.

The Gold studded camo jacket, $116 from Topshop, takes the classic camouflage style to a new level with gold studded epaulettes.

Free People's cargo jacket, $328 at http://www.freepeople.com, is boho chic with patterned knit sweater sleeves in gray.

The Figue vintage military jacket, $1,350 at http://www.figue.com, is one of designer Stephanie von Watzdorf's signature creations. Von Watzdorf embellishes vintage jackets with jewels and patches for one-of-a-kind designs.
