Shopping: L.A. Flea Market at Dodger Stadium debuts Sunday
Southern California has its share of destination open-air markets — the Rose Bowl Flea Market, the Melrose Trading Post at Fairfax High School, the antique markets at Pasadena City College and Long Beach Veteran’s Stadium to name a few.
Phillip Dane, who opened the Fairfax High Flea Market in 1991, kicks off the first L.A. Flea Market at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, July 18 in parking lots 10, 11 and 12. The next two L.A. Flea Market events are scheduled for Aug. 29 and Sept. 26.
The L.A. Flea Market has signed an initial 400 or so vendors, selling new and vintage fashion, accessories, furniture, antiques and “green” products. “I want the L.A. Flea Market to be ‘Fred Segal meets Coachella,’” Dane says. In keeping with that Coachella style, during a preview of the market July 9, the tattooed Dane, who also founded the Peddler on the Roof flea market in 2005 at Sunset Gower Studios, wore a Sonic Youth T-shirt to meet with Dodger brass.
Besides shopping, the L.A. Flea Market will feature live bands, two food truck courts, a beer garden and kids’ activities, including an inflatable Titanic slide, mini go-carts and rock climbing. Participating food trucks include Canter’s Deli, Border Grill, Fishlips Sushi and Coolhaus ice cream. DJ Rick Dees will host charity auctions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
“A whole family can spend an entire day, and everyone leaves happy,” says Shelly Dane, Phillip’s wife and L.A. Flea Market music coordinator.
Admission prices vary. It’s $25 for VIP admission, which includes preferred parking, 7 a.m. early admission, VIP area admittance and restrooms, beverages and runner service to take purchases to your vehicle. Regular early-bird admission at 7 a.m. is $10. General admission is $5 for entrance after 9 a.m. Kids under 12 are free.
