The Streicher sisters, power trio
Talented sister trios continue to grab the spotlight in Southern California. There are the sisters of the rock band Haim (Este, Danielle and Alana) and the Kaynes (fashion designer Jenni, art dealer Maggie and Stanford PhD candidate Saree).
And now the Streichers, a trio of beauty experts whose star clients include Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal, have gathered their forces in a Beverly Hills beauty studio. The whimsically named Striiike, with each “i” representing one of the three, is slated to open Tuesday.
Until now, makeup artist Jenn, 40, and hair stylist Ashley, 30, have offered only red carpet and editorial hair and makeup services through the Magnet Agency. The more accessible and arguably most high-profile sister, brow expert Kristie, 38, began shaping brows at the Warren-Tricomi Salon in New York in 2001; by 2003, she was seeing 32 clients a day, and she notes that patrons have tripled in the last two years.
“I’ve been called ‘The Eyebrow Whisperer,’” says Kristie Streicher. (Pronounced “striker,” the clan’s surname inspired the studio name). The Kristie Streicher Beauty Bar offers her trademarked Feathered Brow, a full look favored by clients such as Julia Roberts and Rachel Weisz.
It was older sister Jenn who first ventured from the Streichers’ hometown of Grass Valley in Northern California to New York City in 1999 and landed a job as assistant to celebrity hair stylist Edward Tricomi, before switching to makeup and signing with Next management. Kristie followed Jenn to Manhattan in 2000. And baby sister Ashley trailed after them in 2002, also assisting Tricomi to learn the hair trade. But by 2005, the sisters had all moved back West to establish a home base in Los Angeles.
Their collaborative history includes some shared celebrity clients, a series of video makeovers for Dermstore.com in 2013 and the recent debut of a Streicher Secrets column on violetgrey.com, the online arm of the L.A.-based beauty retailer. But Striiike is by far their biggest team effort.
All three have a light-handed approach to beauty and a clean, natural aesthetic.
Some beauty don’ts in their book? Glittery makeup, mismatched foundation, hair curled into tight ringlets, heavily drawn brows, any overly contrived look.
Not that they haven’t had beauty blunders of their own, typically inflicted on one another.
“I gave Ashley the worst haircut one time with our mom’s pinking shears,” confesses Kristie. “It was an ear-length bob and I cut the bottom of her ear off too!”
“And I didn’t even care!” adds Ashley, with wide-eyed sincerity. “I thought, ‘My hair is so cute.’ I was in first grade. ... I was the only little girl with short, weird ‘90s hair because I had older sisters who taught me what was cool.”
Products in the Streicher beauty arsenal include Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes mascara ($29), Tom Ford Beauty Traceless Foundation Stick ($80), Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil ($42), Kimiko Super Fine Eyebrow Pencils ($25), Grandebrow eyebrow enhancing serum ($79.95) and Kristie’s Aforé Oil and Après Calming Cream ($45 each).
As hair must-haves, Ashley recommends Sachajuan Hair Powder ($32) and Rodin by Recine Luxury Hair Oil ($70) to keep ends healthy and hydrated.
Striiike will sell a curated collection of beauty products, along with a display of rotating artwork. Services include blow-outs (from $100), haircuts (from $300), full makeup and lash application (from $250), brow grooming and tint with natural vegetable dye ($85-$200), lash tint (from $40) and brow tint (from $50).
A fast touch-up for hair or makeup ($75) and a 15-minute Lightning Striiike fix for hair, makeup and brows by all three sisters ($100) cater to clients on the go. The studio will accommodate groups, bridal parties and photo shoots.
