When it comes to style on “American Idol,” this season, all the action has been at the judges’ desk.

FOR THE RECORD:
Steven Tyler: In the May 15 Image section, an article about Steven Tyler’s fashion sense said the rocker wears beetle boots. The correct term is Beatle boots. —

Jennifer Lopez has been trying her best to steal the spotlight, trotting out one designer outfit after another (Lanvin, Moschino Cheap & Chic, George Chakra), with a new hairstyle and heavy-handed makeup job to match. But Steven Tyler is the real breakout style star on the unscripted show.

His dandified look is vintage rock star, back when rock stars embraced the role 24-7 — hip-hugger pants, leather jackets, beetle boots, long scarves and layered jewelry, by labels such as All Saints and Chrome Hearts.

He told People magazine that he wants his own clothing line — and maybe he should get one. The feather extensions in his hair have already trickled down to the street.

In his new book, “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?” (Harper Collins), Tyler writes about the day he and Aerosmith first got their “sartorial swagger on,” inspired by Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin and Jimmy Page and put together at the Caprice vintage store in Boston.

“We raided the closets of the hipoisie. A mad mix of King’s Road medieval motley, pimp swagger, Stones gypsy gear and Carnaby Street kitsch, Janis’ Haight-Ashbury scarf-draped bordello exotical … and a touch of titillating androgyny…”

Unlike so many other rock stars, Tyler never gave it up.
