SAG Awards 2013: Red carpet takes black-and-white to the edge

Though the SAG Awards may not have the global draw of the Golden Globes and Oscars, that underdog quality can make the red carpet fashion all the more interesting. Not as much at stake means more risk-taking and more chances for lesser-known designers to get a turn.

The biggest trends of Sunday night were black, white and dark blue hues, sheer accents, corseted bodices and side-swept Veronica Lake hair.

FOR THE RECORD:
SAG fashion photos: In the Jan. 28 Calendar, the photos of Jessica Chastain, January Jones and Marion Cotillard on the fashion page of the Screen Actors Guild Awards coverage were credited to Mark Boster of The Times. The three pictures were taken by Allen J. Schaben of The Times. —

The biggest risk-taker? January Jones, wearing a black-and-white Prabal Gurung gown with an intriguing sheer, scarf-like neck treatment. Her blond hair was swept into a punky pompadour-mullet like David Bowie from his Aladdin Sane days — totally rockin’.

SAG red carpet: Hathaway, 2 trends with 1 dress

Most unexpected designer spotlight? Ralph Rucci is one of the most talented American designers working today, but his name is more typically associated with socialites than starlets. Until Sunday night. Michelle Dockery (“Downton Abbey”) looked smoldering in a vintage black Ralph Rucci gown with sheer cutouts revealing the contours of her side cleavage. Yes, side cleavage, and in a good way.

There were several other fabulous, anything-but-basic-black dresses, including Anne Hathaway’s edgy Giambattista Valli gown, with a sleeveless corseted tulle bodice and full sheer skirt revealing a shorter skirt underneath (she looked like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn); Nicole Kidman’s romantic Vivienne Westwood gown with delicate floral embroidery on the front; and Claire Danes’ dramatically minimalist, black one-sleeve Givenchy gown with white, geometric details accenting the leg slit.

Pasadena-based Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy scored with Kerry Washington, who wore their white silk tulle and silver lace gown with a corseted bodice. White gowns have been all over the place lately, but this one was something special.

And it was Marion Cotillard once again, not Jennifer Lawrence, who nabbed the evening’s best Dior by Raf Simons gown, with an ivory silk faille bustier and dark blue-green, high-low skirt. Her short, asymmetrical bob hairstyle was the exception to the evening’s many side-swept waves, and it was so very French and chic.

Lawrence, on the other hand, just looked blue.
