While white roses and outfits stole the sartorial spotlight at the Grammys on Sunday, hair and makeup had plenty of standout moments too.

As makeup artist Jessica Smalls put it, she went with a “Twiggy vibe” for Janelle Monáe’s makeup for the music event in New York. “I decided to make the eye the focal point of the look because I knew Janelle [Monáe] was going to deliver a powerful speech,” she said. “I wanted the audience and everyone watching to be connected to her, and what a better way than to make sure they were looking directly into her eyes.”

So from Lorde’s bold red lip and Andra Day’s purple eyelids to Lady Gaga’s leather-laced braids and Katie Holmes’ finger waves, here are some of the most memorable beauty looks from music’s biggest night.

Rita Ora

With her smooth, brushed-back hair falling in soft waves over her bare shoulders, a deep red lip, perfectly arched brows and glossy lids, Rita Ora was the epitome of Old Hollywood grace.

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes’ sculpted finger wave was expertly coiffed, and her amethyst-hued color beautifully applied, giving her a warm, smoky look that popped against a wash of more subtle tones.

Hailee Steinfeld

Beyoncé

Even though half her face was obscured by cat-eye sunnies, Beyoncé’s glam slayed, per usual, with braids and a statement lip in bold lilac. Here she's seen at the Grammys with her husband, Jay-Z, and their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

Lorde

Lorde played up the color of her vibrant red Valentino gown, with a matching pout. Here she's with Angelo Yelich-O'Connor attending the 60th Grammy Awards in New York on Sunday.

Lady Gaga

Rihanna

Rihanna’s beauty look when performing “Wild Thoughts” transported us to a tropical island — maybe Barbados — thanks to a heavy application of fuchsia blush, smoky eye and giant hibiscus in her hair, which was worn full and natural à la vintage Diana Ross.

Andra Day

Andra Day took her retro custom Victoria Hayes collection dress to the next level with a coiffed bouffant paired with a purple eye and crimson lip that played up the gown’s striking lilac-and-red color combo.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is proving she’s all grown up. There was nothing wild about the singer’s red-carpet look, which showcased a classic and fresh approach to clean skin, barely-there eye makeup and a natural lip.
