Zoë Kravitz talks makeup in first episode of Yves Saint Laurent Beauty web series

Yves Saint Laurent Beauty this week unveiled the first installment of a web series focusing on the pre-show beauty routines of female musicians, featuring Zoë Kravitz. Clips with South Korean singer Gain and Nili Hadida of the French band Lilly Wood and the Prick will follow later this month.

Kravitz, the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, is shown in moody black-and-white and color footage goofing around with her band Lolawolf backstage and applying eyeliner and lip gloss.

“To me, makeup is this kind of war paint sometimes, especially before a show,” Zoë Kravitz says in a voiceover. “It changes the kind of performance that I’m going to give, the aesthetic that I’m kind of in touch with that night.”

The series, “Before the Light,” is the work of French filmmaker Fabien Constant, who is best known for the Carine Roitfeld documentary “Mademoiselle C” and who will shortly begin shooting his first feature film in New York, starring Sarah Jessica Parker as a singer.

“Three cultures, three artists and yet one thing in common: an intimate space for the performer to apply makeup and slip into her character’s skin. With ‘Before the Light,’ this is the idea I’ve tried to capture in order to stay as close as possible to each singer’s creative universe,” Constant said.

YSL Beauty, a division of French cosmetics giant L’Oréal, said further music-themed episodes would air in 2017.

Since joining forces with the brand earlier this year, Kravitz — who has 2.1 million followers on Instagram — has appeared in content released on both her own and YSL Beauty’s social media channels.

She also has a thriving acting career, appearing in the “Divergent” series alongside Shailene Woodley and upcoming HBO television series “Big Little Lies” with Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. Kravitz will be seen next in the “Harry Potter” spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” set for release in November.
