Quentin Tarantino confirms he’s making ‘The Hateful Eight’

Quentin Tarantino’s “Hateful Eight” will saddle up and ride out after all.

Speaking at Comic-Con in San Diego on Sunday, the director confirmed that he’s working to bring the ensemble western to the big screen — reversing previous statements that he would shelve the project indefinitely after the script was leaked online.

Tarantino, who was at the convention to promote his upcoming “Django/Zorro” comic book, said during an audience Q&A, “Yeah, we’re going to be doing ‘The Hateful Eight,’” according to IGN. He added, “We weren’t sure about it, but I just decided just now.”

The film is about a mistrustful group of motley characters — including two competing bounty hunters, a renegade Confederate soldier and a female prisoner — stranded by a blizzard in a saloon in the middle of nowhere.

Tarantino’s announcement confirmed widespread speculation that the “Pulp Fiction” and “Django Unchained” mastermind would ultimately make the movie, despite complaining to Deadline Hollywood in January that the script had leaked and as a result, he would mothball the film and publish the screenplay as a book instead.

In the weeks that followed, Tarantino also became embroiled in a legal dispute with Gawker Media, whom he sued for copyright infringement after the company posted third-party download links to the script on its Defamer blog. Tarantino eventually withdrew the lawsuit.

In April, he directed a staged reading of “The Hateful Eight” with an all-star cast — including Samuel L. Jackson, Amber Tamblyn and Kurt Russell — at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, where he dropped hints that he was still working on the movie.

Two weeks ago, Russell told “Good Day Philadelphia” that “The Hateful Eight” could start shooting early next year.

Tarantino’s “Hateful Eight” announcement wasn’t the only movie news to emerge from Comic-Con over the weekend. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” both released trailers, “Godzilla 2” named its next monsters, and Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey made a surprise appearance to flog “Interstellar.”

Marvel provided a peek at “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” announced a 2017 release date for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” and dished about “Ant-Man.”

DC, meanwhile, showed the first photo of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and screened a brief teaser featuring Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight and Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel.
