Fashion critics will be busy putting together their best-dressed lists as celebrities hit the red carpet for the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday afternoon. And while everyone is eager to see which Armani Prive gown or Marchesa confection actresses will wear this year, we can’t forget about the hair and makeup, because what’s a gown without a glowing face and perfect chignon to top it all off?

We asked some celebrity hair and makeup artists to share their favorite red carpet beauty moments of recent years.

Nicole Richie at the 2010 Oscars

“Nicole really went for it with an elegant, slicked-back high bun and a retro glam, Twiggy-inspired eye.”

Angelina Jolie at the 2001 Oscars

“Angelina Jolie is always a red carpet favorite, so much so that I almost can’t pick a specific look. But I loved her masculine look at the 2001 Oscars. She had slicked-back hair and neutral makeup. She looked so confident in that white, men’s-inspired suit.”

Craig Beaglehole, makeup artist

Michelle Williams at the 2006 Oscars

“This was a moment for Michelle Williams. She had such simple, beautiful and classic makeup and hair with a modern edge. It was all about glowing skin, eyes popping with neutral tones, subtle eyeliner and the most immaculate, long lashes teamed with that gorgeous red lip taking center stage. The hair was such a modern up do while at the same time it looked completely effortless.”

Marion Cotillard at the 2010 Golden Globes

“Marion last year took my breath away! That gorgeous elegant French twist was not too prim and had just the right amount of height. Her makeup looked so beautiful, sexy and natural. The subtle smoky cat liner made her eyes sexy and sultry, her radiant skin was impeccable and her soft pale pink lip worked perfectly.”

Keira Knightley at the 2006 Oscars

“Keira’s eyes were striking with smoky gray shadow against a pinky-mauve semi-matte lipstick. It was the perfect mix of color on a flawless complexion. Her hair was mostly pulled back except for the perfect amount of fringe that helped framed her face and accentuated her jaw line. A classic movie star moment.”

Cate Blanchett at the 2007 SAG Awards

“Dressed in a shimmering gold dress, Cate’s skin was the main feature that really made her look memorable. Sheer peach blush and lipstick against luminous, translucent skin made her appear as if she was lit from within and simple hair that didn’t look ‘done.’ She reminded me of a Greek goddess.”

Julia Roberts at the 2001 Oscars

“This was such a dramatic hair moment. This is such a great example of the right hair for the style and time period of this dress.”

Reese Witherspoon at the 2007 Oscars

“What woman in the world didn’t want to feel as hot as she looked that night? That was the hair everyone was talking about the next day. So simple, yet so sexy at the same time. Women still ask for that hair all the time.”
