Drop-dead red lipsticks for fall 2013

Share

Fancy a pout like Sophia Loren, Marlene Dietrich or Courtney Love?

From ladylike ruby to femme fatale orange-red to renegade bordeaux, the looks of these style icons showed up on the fall fashion runways, albeit in a very modern reprise.

Fall’s bold new red lip colors come in a range of formulations. Tom Ford’s “Crimson Noir” Lip Color is a deeply saturated lipstick, while ILIA Beauty’s “Heart Beat” lip gloss, inspired by Joan Jett’s band the Runaways, is shiny and sheer. The reds in the new Marc Jacobs Beauty collection come in the form of LoveMarc Lip Gels, gel-based lipsticks, and Lust for Lacquer Lip Vinyls, color-drenched lip glosses.

And all it takes is one fast swipe of the right red to update your look. Hint: Go easy on other makeup, and let your lips do the talking.

Some of the looks on the runway were achieved by mixing two shades of red together. At Marc by Marc Jacobs, Shiseido artistic director Dick Page mixed Shiseido Lacquer Rouge lip stains in “Sanguine” and “Drama” to create the ‘40s-meets-’70s cherry-red lips. To achieve the ‘90s-inspired brown-rose lip at Vera Wang, Clé de Peau makeup artist Lucia Pieroni applied the dark bordeaux “Mister Lincoln” shade of Clé de Peau Beauté Extra Rich Lipstick to the entire lip and the lighter burgundy “Tuscany” just to the center.

Dior celebrates the 60th anniversary of its Rouge Dior lipstick collection with a reformulated version of the lipstick in 32 new shades. The leading red, 999, is a tribute to the first lipstick that appeared on Dior’s fashion runway in 1947, the year Dior’s ladylike New Look had its debut.

Armani Beauty’s Rouge Ecstasy Lipsticks, infused with the moisturizing properties of a lip balm, also debut this month. Among them is the refomulated 400, a shade of red inspired by a rose that Giorgio Armani loved.

As legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland once said of her signature color, “I can’t imagine becoming bored with red. It would be like becoming bored with the person you love.”
