Recipes: Game of Thrones cocktails

“Game of Thrones” Season Three premieres Sunday. Have you planned the viewing party yet?
We’re here to help with some cocktails inspired by the series.

Try The Winterfell. It’s a beer-based cocktail, rounded out with apple brandy, maple syrup and a touch of amaretto. Perfect for colder weather, even if you’re not pondering guarding The Wall.

Or go for Mother of Dragons. It may not look like much at first -- the scent of elderflower dominates -- but this concoction packs a punch. Elderflower liqueur is matched with gin, muddled blood orange slices and tonic water for a drink that comes on smooth but finishes with a snap.

Want something a little stronger? Skip the tonic water and Mother of Dragons whips into Dragon’s Tail, a shot sure to smack you into shape for all that is to come this season. You can find the recipes below.

THE WINTERFELL

Servings: 1

1 bottle Irish stout beer
2 ounces apple brandy
1 ounce amaretto
1 ounce maple syrup, preferably grade “B”

Pour the beer into a beer mug or other glass approximately two-thirds full. In an old-fashioned glass, combine the brandy, amaretto and maple syrup. Pour the brandy mixture into the pint glass with the beer and enjoy.

MOTHER OF DRAGONS and DRAGON’S TAIL

Servings: 1

Note: From Test Kitchen director Noelle Carter. To “supreme” or “segment” a citrus, slice off the top and bottom of the whole fruit, then cut off the rest of the peel, carefully following the line of the flesh. Slice free each segment, separating it from the central membrane.

2 blood oranges, supremed or segmented
2 ounces gin
1 ounce elderflower liqueur, preferably St. Germain
Tonic water

To make the “Mother of Dragons”, combine the orange segments with the gin and elderflower liqueur. Muddle the segments well to release the juice. Add ice and fill the rest of the glass with tonic water. Serve immediately.

To make the “Dragon’s Tail,” combine the orange segments, gin and elderflower liqueur in a cocktial shaker. Muddle well to release the orange juice and add ice. Shake and strain into an old-fashioned glass. Serve immediately.
