Breakfast
It's the most important meal of the day, and one you'll forward to if you're serving bacon-maple biscuits, Square One Dining's French toast, home-made bagels, or a cheese omelet with tomatillo sauce.

Dear SOS: Now that Hans Röckenwagner is no longer making ginger scones for sale, perhaps he will share the recipe. I really miss them.
Recipe: Maple bacon biscuits
Breakfast is making a comeback in Southern California restaurants -- even in places you might not expect it. Such as at hip Rustic Canyon in Santa Monica, where pastry chef Zoe Nathan makes these amazing biscuits. Made with a full pound of bacon and 1/2 pound of butter, Times restaurant critic S. Irene Virbila calls them "gloriously crumbly." So successful was the meal that it's been canceled -- not for the usual reasons, but because Nathan and Rustic Canyon owner Josh Loeb are opening up a bakery-cafe two blocks away.

Recipe: Blackberry scones from the perfect N. Calif. getaway
WHAT'S the perfect Northern California getaway? Beautiful views, rambling beachfront garden and, of course, delicious blackberry scones served with breakfast. The scones at Alegria Oceanfront Inn & Cottages in the coastal town of Mendocino are a big draw for columnist Russ Parsons. "These scones have the perfect texture: firm, but slightly crumbly," Parsons says. "And the flavor is just sweet enough without being overpowering."
