Recipe: Riva's carrot cake
Dear SOS: I'm hoping you can help me get a recipe. We went to the new Santa Monica restaurant Riva last weekend. Dinner was great, but I was particularly impressed by the carrot cake. Normally, carrot cake is dense, but this cake was light but still had that great carrot cake taste.

Recipe: Pizzeria Ortica's budino di cioccolato
Dear SOS: I recently dined at Pizzeria Ortica in Costa Mesa and although the food was delicious, the budino di cioccolato (chocolate creme layered with caramel) was absolutely fabulous. With its creamy layers . . . it was the big star of the night. I would truly appreciate it if you could obtain the recipe for me. Thank you.

Recipe: Panforte with candied quince
Panforte is kind of like the Italian version of fruitcake -- a dense, chewy fruitcake at that. But if all of your memories are bad ones, you have to try you this version, from Elisabeth M. Prueitt and her husband, Chad Robertson, owners of San Francisco's acclaimed Tartine Bakery. This recipe version, from their book "Tartine," is a bit complicated, but it makes one of the best panforte we've tasted -- here or in Italy. You can use any type of chopped, dried or candied fruit, in any combination, as a substitute for the fruits in the recipe as long as the total amount is about 4 1/2 cups (25 ounces).

Recipe: Walnut and raisin pie
Old-fashioned custard pies seem to have gone the way of Sunday suppers and country roads, but if you want to learn what you're missing, it only takes only a piece of this fabulous walnut-raisin pie from Patty Pinner's cookbook "Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, With Pie." She starts with a wonderful pecan pie-like custard base, but instead of going with the more traditional nut, Pinner folds walnuts and raisins into the filling and spices the pie with orange zest and nutmeg. Top it with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Recipe: Blackberry scones from the perfect N. Calif. getaway
WHAT'S the perfect Northern California getaway? Beautiful views, rambling beachfront garden and, of course, delicious blackberry scones served with breakfast. The scones at Alegria Oceanfront Inn & Cottages in the coastal town of Mendocino are a big draw for columnist Russ Parsons. "These scones have the perfect texture: firm, but slightly crumbly," Parsons says. "And the flavor is just sweet enough without being overpowering."
