Did civilization begin at the moment when the first human impaled a bit of meat on a twig and charred it over a lightning fire? Claude Lévi-Strauss had a theory about it, we are sure, but we haven't taken an anthropology class for a long, long time. At any rate, the oldest form of cooking is still one of the best. How would primitive man do on this quiz?

Was the sandwich indeed invented by a genteel earl averse to smearing mutton gravy on his hand of whist? Did Apicius once enjoy a hoagie made with flamingo tongues, rhinocerous and gold? Alas, we shall never know the answers to these pressing questions. We can, however, take a run at this week's sandwich quiz.

Panna cotta, bavaroise, empurpled mazamorra, chocolate mousse – we say it’s pudding, and we say to hell with it. As beloved Jell-O pudding spokesman Bill Cosby was fond of saying, you can’t be a kid without it.

Aztecs used cacao as money. Spaniards used it as a drug. Hogarth painted chocolate houses of ill-repute. On Valentine's Day chocolate equals love. And today - today chocolate is the subject of our quiz. What could that possibly mean? Take it and find out.

Did you know there are no hamburgers in Hamburg, Germany? Well, there kind of are, but they are called Frikadeller, and they're really more like pan-fried meatballs. But if you walk into McDonald's, there they are -- real hamburgers -- from the Big Mac on down. Won't you take our hamburger quiz? Ich liebe es, as they say.

Cooking isn't all fun and games, you know. Sometimes you have to do the math. Because while a spoonful of sugar may well help the medicine go down, it is useful to know whether said spoon is a teaspoon or a tablespoon, a dessert spoon or a runcible spoon. And so shall it ever be.

A World Series-related food quiz? No, not this one. We had some perfectly good questions about San Francisco and Detroit lying around, that’s all; two perfectly good cities with interesting food and great starting pitchers – except for Detroit, apparently, but that’s a matter for the sports desk. So anyway, the quiz. Which may or may not have anything in it about the roast peanut guys outside Comerica Park. Or crabs. Won’t you give it a try?

Does kale cure cancer? Will it make your teeth whiter and brighter? Has it publicly canoodled with Pippa Middleton, Khloe Kardashian or J.K. Rowling? Not that we know of, no. But kale is this year's glamorous “it” vegetable, served at all the best restaurants, as beloved in smoothies as it is in a vegan gratin. It seems like just yesterday that kale was an ornamental garden border that even hungry rabbits wouldn't touch. Just look at it now.

In the spirit of disclosure, it must be confessed that the author of this quiz has occasionally been unkind on the subject of dietary restrictions, perhaps as a result of exposure to more than his share of Tofurkey sausage pizza and gluten-free bakery treats. Yet when an invitation to a halal meal is broached, dishes prepared according to precepts of Islamic dietary law, the anticipation becomes nothing but joy. The cuisines of the Islamic world are as varied and delicious as any on Earth, as different in their flavor as Beirut is from Java. Is Islamic cooking unknowable? Try this quiz and decide for yourself.
