READERS WEIGH IN
Not buying it? Still think one of these theories is a culprit in Americans' expanding waistlines? Why?
1.
So it's not actually the HFCS that is making us fat, it is our increased consumption of it.
Hmmmm. And why have we increased our consumption of sugar? Is it intentional? Did we all go out 30 or so years ago and say, I think I will eat more sweets because it is so good for me? No, I don't think so. What has happened is that the companies who make processed food have increased the amount of sugar AND HFCS that they are adding to foods. People like the taste and they eat more and it creates a viscious cycle of addictive eating behavior. No matter what the studies say there is no proof that HFCS or sugar are good for you!
2. I eat all I want low-carb, weigh 114 though sedentary middle-aged & have lowest-risk cholesterol ratio. Don't blame the overweight–our food is boobytrapped with sugars/chemicals that ruin metabolism causing irresistible wrong brain signals re what/how much to eat. Government naively says “fats make you fat” but research shows it’s carbs. Fats are “essential” (& hunger isn’t satiated without them–obesity zoomed when folks obeyed the cutback directive). Protein-amino acids-are “essential” (for me 50g per the book Protein Power). Carbs aren’t essential; avoid sugar, refined carbs (become sugar fast), artificial sweeteners (try natural Stevia)
3. Reduced smoking doesn’t explain the alarming rise in childhood obesity.
4. One of the factors in weight gain is the "all you can drink" feature at the fast food chains for the cheap corn syrup sugar substitue.
5. Top 6 things making Americans fat. 1. EATING MORE CALORIES THAN WE BURN 2. EATING TOO MUCH FAT. Yes, trans fats are bad but so are saturated fats. 3. NOT SLEEPING ENOUGH. When you're sleep deprived (which many of us are) your Cortisol levels rise and other hormones that regulate appetite are triggered. This combination causes muscle loss (catabolism) and an appetite increase. Less muscle mass and a higher appetite make gaining fat almost inevitable. 4. INACTIVITY. 5. POOR DIET – food choices high in simple carbohydrate send our insulin levels through the roof. Stick with fiber-dense food choices. 6. DEHYDRATION.
6. how about the growth hormones involved in the dairy and protein business?
7. Losing weight is NOT always directly tied to eating less. There are so many contributors to obestity and they must all be addressed. So many obese people are, understandably, self-conscious and may endure public abuse or humiliation that they just continue down a downward spiral of reject and depression. For me, losing weight has been alot of fun and easier because I use enRgy from GBG. I get it from acevitality.com
8. Are you kidding? We have met the enemy, and it is us! We eat junk, and way tioo much of it, and we don't exercise. Then we wonder why we get fat? Talk about self-delusion! "It's not my fault--it's my genes! It's my upbringing! It's my karma!" Stop whining, people! Get up off your fat asses and hike! Bicycle! Do anything that burns calories! And stay the keck away from fast food! Eat some fish, fer cryin' out loud! We're not talking rocket science here!
9. There are estrogen (female hormone) analogues that leach out of the plastic that lines our food containers, etc. The result is that the sperm count is plummeting and schoolboys have the hips and bottoms of fat girls, and the schoolgirls are maturing earlier. Women are getting ever more breast cancer and fibroids. Going back to using glass bottles for beverages would be a major reduction in the estrogen analogues in our diets. And no matter what the government says, getting hormones in the milk so cows will lactate more is a stupid idea.
10. American Four Food Groups: Meat, cheese, Bread, and Dessert. Fat people primarily eat too much of the above. They claim their vegetable is their potatoes. Very few obese people eat more vegetables than meat and cheese on bread. It is near impossible to find good vegetarian food at restaurants, let alone foods minus meat and cheese. Even salads in Fast-food places put meat and cheese on their salads. Years ago I watched the obese lady in the motorized wheelchair fill up her shopping cart with bread, frozen meats, and potatoes. I made the connection and have been nearly vegetarian ever since. I am not obese anymore.
