Your thoughts on the side effects of these medications.

1. I just finished reading all the comments posted. A little education the FDA is a subsidary of Big Pharma. All drugs are designed to treat symptoms not causes. As a doctor friend om mine said the drug companies want you on medication from the cradle to to the grave. Prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death in this country. If you eliminate heart disease they are second. The same doctor said you have to die of something natural causes translate to heart gave out.

2. The one overlooked aspect of this story is the mass murders at Virginia Tech, Columibine, etc, etc. Without exception all of the shooters were on anti-depressants, and with rare exceptions this is not menttioned.

3. The psychotropics are the worst, and we continue to persuade, coerce, and somtimes force people to take them. Yet they have no real efficacy, and they are simply not safe. It's criminal. Duane Sherry http://discoverandrecover.wordpress.com

5. I have been working as a Program Manager in a non-profit agency that provides mental health services to children and their families for the last 9 years and have seen such an increase in children that are referred for suicidal feelings as well as a desire to hurt others. I was appreiciative of the LA Times article mentioning that suicide symptoms could be a side effect of certain asthma, epilepsy, and flu medications. This is so important for our therapists to know this so they can rule this out as a possible factor! News like this should be on the front page!I Parents need to know about this! I will print out this article for our staff!

7. Maybe the FDA will take a look at what is being term "treatment resistent depression" and medications. The psychotropic medications need to be re-evaluated. To many lives have been harmed.

8. This is a piece of incoherent semi literate crap! Where do you journo's get off writing this rubbish? Do you get paid for this? What you do by trivialising scientific reasearch in this manner to fill column inches is raise anxiety levels and provide no solutions. All drugs have side effects prescribing is balancing the therapeutic value against side effects. Often when it comes down to it drugs are prescribed because of the side effects and these often only become visible after years of use.

9. Erika, you need to stay alive and take care of yourself for the sake of your kids. Clearly the incident of being sexually harassed at work was very traumatic for you and must have brought up feelings, from possibly other experiences in your life. Please, whatever you do, seek mental health help. There are family service agencies that provide counseling on a sliding scale. Once you treat your depression and axiety you will be able to cope well enough to look for a job, pay your bills and take care of your family. Family Service agencies such as Catholic Family or Jewish Family Services

10. Our medical doctors have been making us sicker with all of the pills they prescribe and sample. Insomnia is bad, but Ambien makes things worse. A low dose of 5mg makes me function like a zombie the following day. Trazadone is used off label for insomnia - oh wow talk about a bad headache, even with only 25mg. No wonder we now hear about Sertonin Syndrome! There are several other drugs I could list, but I'm only allowed 650 characters. We are truly being used as chemical guinea pigs!
