Two recent auctions -- one by Wright in Chicago on Oct. 7 and another by Doyle New York on Oct. 8 --- featured modern classics as well as works by lesser-known studio artisans. The Wright sale included self-taught woodworker Michael Coffey's Menage a Trois (Lot 193), a stool, mirror and desk or vanity table that exemplified the craftsman's obsession with organic curves and dramatic wood grain. The pre-auction estimate was $15,000 to $20,000; the suite of furnishings sold for $18,000.
