9. Dodge House Irving Gill West Hollywood, 1916 (demolished 1970)
Hard to believe this Modernist treasure was torn down to make way for apartments, but it happened 38 years ago, when historic preservation was still an exotic notion here. The Dodge House was visible on the other side of Kings Road when Schindler built his residence and studio (see No. 1). Nowadays, Gill's historic home survives only through photographs, memory and reputation. |
