First Look: How to submit your architecture or interior design project

Share

How it works: The goal of First Look is to let L.A. at Home readers see and discuss more residential designs in Southern California. With hundreds of homes submitted to us every month, many of them -- some beautiful, some unusual, some provocative -- don’t quite make it into our print pages or our full-length website photo galleries. First Look will allow us to present more homes each month. It’s a platform for lesser known firms and emerging designers to showcase their recent work, and it’s a chance for readers to post comments and join the conversation about good design.

Criteria: Projects must be residential, in Southern California and less than 18 months old.

Instructions: Because of the sheer volume of submissions and the limitations of the Mesozoic Era computers here (kindergarteners have better memory), please submit the following on disc or flash drive to the address listed at the bottom. Be sure to include:

1. Designer info: Name, website or e-mail address, phone number.

2. Design challenge: Two or three sentences (no more) describing the clients and their goals. Include project costs; if clients decline to state, please say “decline to state.”

3. Design overview: 400 words max. Outline key design elements and innovations. Explain prominent features in photos. Try to address the question: How does this house speak to how Southern Californians are living today?

4. Publications: Where has the project been published, in print or online? Are any media considering it for future coverage? Prior or pending coverage does not necessarily preclude coverage here.

5. Photos: 8 to 20 low-resolution images, each less than 1MB in size, each labeled by subject (“master bedroom,” “kitchen tile,” etc.). JPEGs preferred.

Save documents and photos to a disc or flash drive, then send the materials to:First Look/Home Section
