His moment

Times Staff Writer

“IS your midcentury heart all aquiver?” one guest asked L.A. designer Michael Berman at the opening of the Ralph Pucci showroom last week. Whose heart wouldn’t be? Pucci, above, brings the work of two great living modernists -- Denmark’s Jens Risom and Manhattanite Vladimir Kagan -- and 11 others to a 9,000-square-foot space in the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. Among the 200-plus party guests ducking around David Weeks’ mobile-style lighting fixture were Academy Award best actor nominee David Strathairn, there to support his friend Chris Lehrecke, who produces furniture from fallen Northeastern timber and blackened steel. Kagan, 78, dropped in to unveil his Skulptur line, which he called “absolute couture replicas” of his sofas and chairs from 1953 and ’54. “I’m always pleased to be here,” said the designer, whose furniture graces the Standard hotel lobby in downtown L.A. “This city is home for my style and taste.” (310) 360-9707, www.ralph-pucci.com.

More style for less

Interior designer Tim Clarke, who splashes rich, unexpected colors onto a mix of European classicism and beach house bohemian, is having his first sale at his new Santa Monica studio. The loft-style space has two levels of retail displays featuring John Robshaw’s block-printed Indian textiles (www.johnrobshaw.com) and Juliska mouth-blown glassware (www.juliska.com) as well as Clarke’s custom upholstery designs and period reproductions, such as a red leather wing chair, now $2,100. Antiques include a 1870s teak British colonial china cabinet, reduced from $4,300 to $1,800. Down-filled decorative pillows in vintage fabrics are marked down as low as $75, and 20th century ceramic vases in mossy shades start at $50. Mirror, mirror

Now you see it, now you don’t. Designer Matt Carr’s Pirouette puts a spin on the common mirror, turning it from a reflective surface to a minimalist black wall hanging with the push of a finger. Inspired by a revolving billboard, Pirouette is composed of triangular slats covered in a wood composite on one side, mirror on the second, and mirror etched with a rococo wallpaper print on the third for endless hours of amusement for narcissists. The wall piece was issued in a limited edition of 100, part of Umbra’s U + Studio Collection. It’s $770 at Zipper in Los Angeles, (323) 951-0620.
