THE WARMTH OF WOOD

( William Finlay )
Creating a spa-like sanctuary at home doesn't mean you have to bring in a demolition crew to redo your bathroom. In these cost-conscious times, when a calming environment can be an affordable treat, there are new accessories that can add a Zen-like mood to an existing bathroom.

Japanese-style bath accessories offer peaceful updates to a bath. Floor grates 1 1/2 inches high are used in place of mats. Available in yellow cedar or hinok wood, from $20 to $30 per square foot. A bathing stool works in a sauna, two sizes, $90 to $170. A bucket for a cool-down douse, two sizes, $100 to $130. Bath tubs start at $3,600. Sea Otter WoodWorks. (888) 810-7717. www.woodentubs.com
