Owner Touche Zertuche walks through his Organic Modernism home furnishings business. Organic Modernism, 315 N. La Brea Ave., (323) 525-0911. Opened in July as the first West Coast branch of the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based manufacturer and retailer, which offers accessibly priced furniture based on original designs in metal and midcentury classics in wood. Let’s get the obvious question out of the way first: His name is Belvedere.

The less obvious fact: He’s one of the adorable, adoptable pets who will benefit from Downtown Modernism, a June 30 furniture sale featuring vintage design retailers from across Los Angeles, all gathered at the Vernon factory of Modernica.

Other shops at the outdoor market will include Fat Chance, Reform Gallery, Rehab Vintage, Material Environment, Amsterdam Modern and Shopclass. Among the offerings: ceramics from $45, bamboo hoop chairs from $185 and a late 1950s George Nelson grandfather clock for $1,995.

Modernica organized the event and will sell vintage pieces from its prop rental division, as well as new versions of midcentury modern fiberglass chairs like the one shown here. It’s $299, a 20% reduction. (The price for Belvedere: a $250 suggested donation for the Downtown Dog Rescue.)

Downtown Modernism is to run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2901 Saco St. in Vernon. General admission is $3; children 12 and younger are free. All proceeds from the admission fee will go to Downtown Dog Rescue, which will have on-site adoptions. Actor and animal lover Andy Dick is scheduled to host the event, which also is to feature DJ Annie Hardy of Giant Drag and food trucks.

If the event is successful, organizers said, Downtown Modernism may become an annual event.
